The UConn Huskies are currently enjoying an impressive undefeated streak of 17-0, continuing their strong performance after a dominating victory against Creighton, where they overwhelmed their opponents with a score of 95-54. Head coach Geno Auriemma recently provided updates on the health of some players as the team looks to maintain their momentum amid a challenging season.
In recent years, injuries have plagued the Huskies, but this season has seen a notably healthier roster. Presently, three players—Jana El Alfy, Morgan Cheli, and Ice Brady—are on the injury list. Auriemma provided encouraging news regarding El Alfy, who has been recovering from a concussion sustained during practice on January 5. “Jana has done a couple of workouts, so we’re really close with her. Maybe the next day or two,” Auriemma shared, hinting at a possible return soon.
However, the situation regarding Cheli and Brady is less optimistic. Coach Auriemma expressed doubts about their return for the remainder of the season. Cheli, who has been sidelined since late February due to ankle surgery, has not played a single game this season. Auriemma mentioned that while she is making progress, her absence raises the possibility of her redshirting if she does not return this year.
Brady’s situation is also troubling; after playing in the first two games, she was forced to sit out due to knee inflammation. Initially dismissed as a minor issue, the injury has proven persistent, and she too may qualify for a medical redshirt due to her limited participation.
While the potential absence of these key players is disappointing for UConn fans, the team is still in a strong position, with at least 12 healthy players available for their upcoming game against Villanova at Gampel Pavilion. The return of El Alfy could further bolster the squad, showcasing the depth and resilience of the Huskies as they aim to extend their undefeated streak and compete fiercely in the remainder of the season.
