The U.S. Speedskating team, gearing up for the upcoming Milan Cortina Winter Games, is embracing a light-hearted camaraderie that could ease the pressures of competition. Athlete Casey Dawson, 25, from Park City, Utah, recently gained attention for carrying around a quirky plastic foot attached to a phone case and a pink, heart-adorned backpack. These items, a punishment for losing at fantasy football, serve not only as a source of amusement but also as a reminder of humility.

“It keeps everything fun and light-hearted,” Dawson said. His first event in Milan will be the men’s 5,000 meters on Sunday. He has to carry the backpack throughout the Games, a unique twist that also ensures he remains memorable during the event’s spotlight.

Dawson and his teammates see the humorous side of this setup, emphasizing how team bonding can distract from the high-stress environment of Olympic competitions. “We’re not just talking about speedskating all the time on the road or at practice,” said Ethan Cepuran, another team member from Glen Ellyn, Illinois. This fantasy football league, consisting of skaters, started as a friendly competition five years ago, eventually incorporating comical penalties for the losers.

The playful spirit of the league has made it a notable aspect of their routine, allowing skaters to support each other beyond the ice. Dawson and Cepuran explained how past punishments evolved into more entertaining spectacles, indicating a shared commitment to keeping the atmosphere enjoyable.

As they approach the Winter Games, the U.S. team not only aims for medals but also cherishes the fun and relationships they’ve built along the way. The antics surrounding fantasy football reflect the camaraderie that can help athletes remain grounded amidst intense pressure, showcasing the lighter side of their rigorous training environment. With events ahead and a strong team dynamic, there’s a hopeful anticipation for their performance in Milan.
