The Dominion Brothers Rugby Club is set to make its mark at the Coral Coast Sevens Tournament in Sigatoka, commencing this Thursday. The club is fielding two teams: an Under-20 squad vying for the youth title and a senior men’s team competing for the prestigious I-Wau trophy.
The U20 team boasts an impressive history, having clinched the youth championship in 2024 and finishing as finalists the year prior. The senior team also brings a strong track record, reaching the cup quarter-finals in 2025. According to manager Manasa Moto, this background of success has inspired current players to take rugby seriously as a viable career option.
The tournament’s significant prize money adds another layer of motivation for the players. Many participants come from backgrounds as school dropouts or unemployed youths, viewing sevens rugby as a pathway to financial stability for their families. Moto praised the commitment of these young athletes, emphasizing the effort they’ve invested in hopes of achieving a successful performance that could change their circumstances.
Preparation for the tournament commenced after the club qualified last year, and players are acutely aware of the competitive landscape they will face in Sigatoka. Moto expressed confidence in his team’s capabilities, stating, “The level of competition at Coral Coast is on par with overseas sevens tournaments. All participating teams have prepared thoroughly, especially the major sides coming from around the world. But our boys have also prepared well and are ready for the challenge.”
With a rich history of developing outstanding rugby talent, including renowned players like Juita Wainiqolo, Sireli Maqala, Filipo Bukayaro, and Joji Nasova, the club plays a crucial role in shaping the sport in the region.
