PENIASI Racagi, a promising young police officer and former rugby player, tragically lost his life last weekend under circumstances that have left his family and community in mourning. Recognized for his exceptional talent and dedication to rugby during his time with the Devos rugby team, Racagi’s discipline caught the attention of a local police officer, who encouraged him to pursue a career in law enforcement. This pivotal moment led Racagi to join the Fiji Police Force approximately four years ago.

His uncle, Ari Tema, spoke fondly of Racagi’s suitability for policing, highlighting the discipline and obedience that he embodied. Growing up in a devout Christian family, Racagi was instilled with values of humility, respect, and faith, which he carried into his professional life.

At just 24 years old, Racagi was the youngest of three siblings and had completed his education up to Year 13, before embarking on a rugby career that eventually guided him to serve his community as a police officer. His family revered strong principles, particularly the respect for elders, a legacy passed down by his father, who served as a lay pastor.

On the night leading up to his tragic death, Racagi was fulfilling his duties at the Lami Police Station when he was reported missing. His body was later discovered behind the Lami Oceania Wesley Church. The shocking news reached his family through an officer the following Sunday, shattering their sense of normalcy before the word spread on social media.

Racagi’s mother, Vinaina Veregu, is grappling with profound grief, having lost her youngest child less than a year after the passing of her husband. Overwhelmed by sorrow, she was escorted by relatives from Naviqiri to Labasa to support her during this unfathomable time. Remembering her son, she reflected on Racagi as a compassionate individual who consistently prioritized the needs of others and served as a role model for the youth in their village.

As the family mourns the loss of Racagi, they are calling for justice. They expressed a deep desire for accountability, stating, “We want whoever is responsible to face the full brunt of the law. We have many questions that are left unanswered. He did not deserve this.” Amid their grief, there remains a glimmer of hope for resolution and closure following this tragic event, as the community rallies together to support those affected.
