A group of young boys from the Qauia Settlement in Lami is choosing creativity and rhythm over risk, embracing music as a means to generate income and make positive choices. The Qe Black Qauia crew, consisting of about 25 boys, showcases their talent through a local tradition known as qiri kapa. They create vibrant beats by banging on tins and drums, while one member entertains the crowd with dance.
The initiative was launched by Peni Tuqalo, who sought to raise funds for school supplies and alleviate financial pressure on parents as the new year approached. With most members still in school — the youngest being a sixth grader — this project not only provides financial support but also serves as a constructive way for the youth to channel their energy.
“In today’s society, many young people resort to stealing to earn money, but this provides a much safer and honest alternative,” Peni remarked. Since its inception in 2023, the group has earned recognition within their community and beyond, performing in various towns to widen their audience.
Their efforts often involve traveling by bus to reach different locations, including a recent journey to the west for a fundraising event. Through their performances, these boys are not only addressing their educational needs but also sending a strong message about making wise life choices.
By transforming their talents into a source of income, Peni and his crew are exemplifying a path of honesty and creativity, inspiring others to consider alternatives to negative influences. This initiative not only benefits the boys themselves, but also promotes the idea of positive engagement within the community.
