The Denver Broncos are set to welcome back a familiar face on Sunday as they face the Jacksonville Jaguars: former Broncos wide receiver Tim Patrick, who has made a name for himself in his new home. Patrick’s journey with the Broncos began in 2017 when he joined the team as a practice squad receiver, progressing to a key offensive player by 2020. Over two consecutive seasons, he logged over 700 receiving yards, earning himself a three-year contract worth $34.5 million.
Unfortunately, Patrick’s promising career took a hit as he faced season-ending injuries in consecutive summers. Just as he appeared ready to resume his role, the Broncos found themselves in a tough salary-cap situation following the release of quarterback Russell Wilson. This led to Patrick being released just before the start of the regular season when the team couldn’t find a trade partner.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton spoke warmly about Patrick, reminiscing about his professionalism and the charm he brought to the locker room. “We were devastated… I think it was like one of the first reps of minicamp,” he recalled, emphasizing that Patrick has continually impressed him since leaving the team, often making appearances in the weekly highlights.
Following his time with the Broncos, Patrick played the 2024 season with the Detroit Lions, where he made 16 appearances and registered nine starts. Although his production was modest, it marked a solid return. This past spring, the Lions re-signed him before trading him to the Jaguars for a sixth-round draft pick. So far this season, he has made 13 appearances for Jacksonville, recording 13 receptions for 172 yards and three touchdowns.
At 32 years old, while his playing days are numbered, Patrick’s resilience and leadership continue to shine. As he steps onto the field at Empower Field at Mile High this Sunday, he will be greeted warmly by former teammates, underscoring the bonds he cultivated during his time with the team.
