Tesla has announced the end of production for its Model S sedan and Model X SUV, a decision articulated by CEO Elon Musk during the company’s quarterly earnings call. Musk confirmed that production of both electric vehicles will conclude in the upcoming quarter, but reassured current owners that support for their vehicles will continue indefinitely.

Musk emphasized the importance of advancing towards an autonomous future, stating, “It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge.” He urged potential buyers to make their orders soon as the final versions of these models are prepared for sale.

Since their launch, the Model S in 2012 marked a turning point in making electric vehicles mainstream, while the Model X followed as Tesla’s second significant vehicle offering. However, expectations for the more affordable Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV to dominate sales have not been realized in recent years, as their sales growth has stalled amid stiffening competition from both traditional automotive manufacturers and new entrants like Rivian and Lucid Motors.

Musk also noted that with the closure of production for the Model S and X, Tesla will refocus its efforts in the Fremont factory on building Optimus robots, indicating a shift towards new technological advancements within the company.

While the end of the Model S and Model X may evoke sentimentality for many fans and early adopters of Tesla vehicles, the company’s pivot towards innovative solutions reaffirms its commitment to staying at the forefront of the electric and autonomous vehicle market.
