Vanuatu United FC is set for an exciting clash against South Island United in the OFC Pro League, a match that carries special meaning for winger Jordy Tasip. He will reunite with former teammates from Christchurch United, where he played last season in the New Zealand National League.

Tasip expressed his enthusiasm about facing off with friends, noting, “They’re good friends to me, so tomorrow is a special game for me.” He is particularly looking forward to seeing familiar faces such as Steven van Dijk, Ollie van Rijssel, Riley Grover, Charlie Beale, and the injured Josh Rogerson.

Reflecting on his time in Christchurch, Tasip shared his experiences and challenges from arriving in New Zealand during the winter months. He recalled, “Yes, it was really cold for us, like minus zero. During that time, we were also training early in the morning, so it’s a big challenge for me,” adding a lighthearted touch with a laugh. His strong determination and work ethic granted him respect among his teammates.

South Island United’s vice-captain, Van Rijssel, acknowledged Tasip’s influence on their squad, joking, “He’s a legend, isn’t he? I think he enjoyed his time with us, apart from the cold weather maybe.” He further remarked on Tasip’s relentless effort on the field, anticipating a spirited contest as they once again face off. “He’s a worker, and he’ll just get stuck in,” Van Rijssel humorously indicated that he would be ready with his shin pads in case Tasip comes his way during the match.

Tasip credits much of his development to the guidance of coach Ryan Edwards and his teammates in Christchurch, stating, “I picked a lot of things from the coaches and the players. To reach a level like this, you have to commit yourself and be on time.” While he recognizes the skills of his former teammates, he remains diplomatic about the potential advantage their insider knowledge might provide.

Van Rijssel also highlighted South Island United’s eagerness to recover from a disappointing opening loss to Auckland FC, along with a rained-out match earlier in the week. He noted the challenges of being a professional footballer, emphasizing, “All the travel is a new challenge for all of us,” and highlighted the importance of camaraderie within the team for their success.

“This league is very much about looking ahead,” Van Rijssel pointed out, acknowledging the ongoing issues of travel, fatigue, and adjusting to life on the road. As South Island United gears up to face Vanuatu United, the players are motivated and ready to give their all. This match not only tests their skills but also celebrates the friendships developed throughout their journeys in football.
