Vanuatu United FC is gearing up for an exciting match against South Island United in the OFC Pro League, a game that holds special significance for winger Jordy Tasip. He will be facing off against several former teammates from Christchurch United, where he spent the previous season playing in the New Zealand National League.

Tasib expressed enthusiasm about the reunion with friends, stating, “They’re good friends to me, so tomorrow is a special game for me.” Among those he will see again are Steven van Dijk, Ollie van Rijssel, Riley Grover, Charlie Beale, and the injured Josh Rogerson.

Reflecting on his experience in Christchurch, Tasip shared the challenges he faced upon arriving in New Zealand during the winter. “Yes, it was really cold for us, like minus zero. During that time, we were also training early in the morning, so it’s a big challenge for me,” he recalled with a laugh. His determination and work ethic quickly earned him a respected place within the squad.

South Island United vice-captain Van Rijssel remarked on Tasip’s contribution to the team, joking, “He’s a legend, isn’t he. I think he enjoyed his time with us, apart from the cold weather maybe.” The fullback also noted Tasip’s relentless drive on the field, anticipating a competitive matchup as they face off again. “He’s a worker, and he’ll just get stuck in,” Van Rijssel said, humorously adding that he would be prepared with his shin pads should Tasip make his way over to his side of the pitch.

Tasip attributes much of his growth as a player to the support of his coach Ryan Edwards and his teammates in Christchurch, commenting, “I picked a lot of things from the coaches and the players. To reach a level like this, you have to commit yourself and be on time.” Although he acknowledges the skills of his former teammates, he remains diplomatic about whether insider knowledge will provide his current team with an advantage.

Van Rijssel has noted that South Island United is eager to bounce back after a disappointing opening day loss to Auckland FC, coupled with a rained-out match on Tuesday. Embracing the experience of being a professional footballer, he remarked, “All the travel is a new challenge for all of us,” stressing the camaraderie within the team as crucial to their progress.

“This league is very much about looking ahead,” Van Rijssel stated, highlighting the ongoing challenges of managing travel, fatigue, and adjusting to life on the road. As South Island United prepares to face Vanuatu United, players are ready to give their best, motivated by the spirit of competition and the bonds formed along the journey. This match promises to be not only a test of skill but also a celebration of friendships fostered on the field.
