The Tartan Army is standing firm in the face of Donald Trump’s recent statements suggesting he might prohibit Boston from hosting World Cup matches. The comments from the former US President arose following the tragic ICE civilian killings in Minneapolis and have led to unease among Scottish fans preparing for their first World Cup appearance in 28 years.

With over 20,000 Scots expected to travel to Boston in June, the uncertainty stirred by Trump’s remarks has prompted criticism. Gordon Peden, a devoted member of the Tartan Army and former Partick Thistle board member, expressed his disappointment, viewing Trump’s comments as an affront to Scotland’s supporters. At 75 years old, Gordon stated that while he doubts Trump would follow through with his threats, the unpredictability of his actions raises concerns.

He noted, “It seems very rough on Scotland fans that we have waited 28 years for a World Cup finals and this man is seeking to put doubt in people’s minds.” He added that despite the uncertainty created, the commitment to attend the matches against Haiti and Morocco remains strong, as all travel plans and financial investments have already been made.

Trump’s comments, which gained traction again through social media, criticized Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu for what he termed her “radical left” ideology, suggesting that her leadership might jeopardize the safety and suitability of the city to host the matches. Trump’s remarks included a warning that he could reach out to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss relocating matches if he deems conditions unsafe.

However, FIFA later clarified that the authority to move matches does not rest with Trump. This reassurance highlights the organization’s commitment to the event and provides hope that the long-anticipated World Cup experience will proceed as planned in Boston. For the Tartan Army, their steadfast spirit and determination to celebrate their team’s achievements will undoubtedly shine through, regardless of the surrounding political rhetoric.
