Vendors at the Suva Municipal Market are voicing increasing frustration over persistent drainage problems that they have repeatedly raised. Fulori Toga, a vendor in the Vale ni Kana area, which specializes in ready meals, disclosed that she and her fellow vendors have brought the issue to the attention of the market master multiple times, yet meaningful progress remains elusive.

The ongoing blockages have disrupted daily operations, raising significant concerns about hygiene among the vendors. Toga emphasized that these challenges impede their ability to serve customers effectively. Responding to these complaints, Suva City Council (SCC) chief executive officer Tevita Boseiwaqa acknowledged the recurring drainage issues, stating that the outdated system is prone to blockages. He pointed out that areas like Vale ni Kana and the fish market experience obstructions roughly every two weeks.

Boseiwaqa confirmed that the drainage system is currently blocked and noted that the council is waiting for a contractor to carry out necessary flushing works. He also warned vendors against washing fish in certain areas, as this practice only exacerbates the blockage problems.

While the council has provided hygiene training sessions, including food safety workshops last year, Boseiwaqa acknowledged that some traditional practices remain prevalent among vendors. He emphasized the importance of both the council and the vendors working collaboratively to improve cleanliness and drainage maintenance. Vendors have been encouraged to report issues directly to the market manager or through the Market Vendors Association.

This situation underscores the necessity of community cooperation to enhance hygiene and infrastructure in public markets, as vendors and the council endeavor to find viable solutions together. By engaging in open communication and shared responsibility, there is hope for a more efficient and cleaner market environment.
