The pre-season has come to a close, and the enthusiasm surrounding the start of the 30th edition of Super Rugby Pacific is palpable. The Fijian Drua is set to embark on its fifth season with a highly anticipated match against Moana Pasifika in Lautoka, an event being dubbed the “Battle of the Pacific.”

This clash promises to be one of the highlights of the opening round, especially if both teams can harness their characteristic expansive play that embodies their Pacific heritage. With fresh talent joining both rosters, establishing effective teamwork from the outset will be critical.

Historically, this fierce rivalry has seen the Drua hold a slight advantage in their head-to-head encounters, winning four of their six matches, while Moana has secured two victories. Notably, four of these matches have been decided by a margin of seven points or less, illustrating the competitive nature of their contests, as reflected in the overall points difference of just three points, with the Drua at 192 and Moana at 189.

Under the guidance of Head Coach Glen Jackson, the Drua has assembled a promising squad for the season. The franchise was created to provide local talent with professional opportunities without needing to leave Fiji, fostering a deeper connection to their communities. While some players continue to explore lucrative opportunities abroad, an increasing number of Fijian stars are returning to contribute to their home team. Fans and analysts are particularly eager to see how players like Mayanavanua, Vakatawa, Fines-Leleiwasa, and Mataele will perform this season.

Despite needing to compensate for the loss of key players such as Ikanivere, Masi, Ravutaumada, and Muntz, the Drua’s roster remains rich in experience, with 20 internationals among the match-day 23. Moreover, three players who have yet to gain test caps are prepared to bring depth from the bench, ensuring strategic options.

The return of Virimi Vakatawa, a seasoned player from the French rugby scene, is especially thrilling. His considerable experience, gained from numerous matches in French 7s, is expected to provide invaluable leadership on the field. Additionally, the introduction of Temo Mayanavanua, formerly of Lyon and Northampton Saints, adds further leadership as he steps into the role of co-captain alongside Frank Lomani. His international experience will be vital in steering the team through challenging encounters, particularly during away games.

Fijian powerhouse Isoa Nasilasila will also play a noteworthy role, marking his 51st appearance for the Drua, which makes him the all-time leader in the club’s history. He and flanker Kitione Salawa, as foundational players, serve as guiding figures for up-and-coming talent.

On the Moana Pasifika side, despite having lost their previous two encounters in Fiji, the team remains competitive following a solid year marked by notable victories. The absence of All Black superstar Ardie Savea, who is on sabbatical in Japan, opens up opportunities for emerging talents. Ngani Laumape, a former All Black, is poised to make his much-anticipated Super Rugby Pacific debut since 2021, with his matchup against Vakatawa being one of the highlights of the game.

Moana boasts a vibrant mix of Samoan and Tongan internationals, though they may lack the overall test experience that the Drua possesses. Players like William Havili will also make history as the first Moana player to reach 50 caps, underscoring his dedication and development within the team.

With four exciting home games set to take place in Lautoka, it is crucial for the Drua to gain points early and establish a robust start to their season, in contrast to previous years. A successful outcome against Moana and strong performances on the following road trip against the Waratahs could significantly enhance their aspirations for a top-four finish.

As the season approaches, anticipation is high. Coach Jackson emphasizes the importance of a week-by-week strategy to build a successful campaign. With his Commentary Box experience spanning five years, excitement is mounting for this matchup, with many predicting a victory for the Drua as they aim for their tenth consecutive win at home.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early for a captivating curtain-raiser featuring the Drua Development Team against an Australian-Fijian combination, kicking off at 12:30 PM. Toso Drua toso!
