Amber weather warnings have been issued throughout the UK as Storm Goretti approaches, bringing with it the threat of heavy snowfall and powerful winds. Meteorological forecasts indicate that the Midlands could see as much as 30 cm of snow, while gusts reaching 90 mph are anticipated in exposed regions, posing a significant risk to life and property.

The storm is set to deliver a cold and cloudy Thursday, characterized by wintry weather that will move in from the south-west. According to Alex Burkill from the Met Office, this storm, which has been named by Météo France, will result in “wet, windy, and wintry weather” particularly affecting central and southern portions of the UK. As the incoming rain collides with the current cold air mass, significant snowfall is expected to increase through Thursday evening into Friday.

The amber warnings suggest an “increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather,” a step up from yellow warnings, and highlight potential travel disruptions, including road and rail closures, power outages, and threats to safety. Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong referred to Storm Goretti as a “multi-hazard event” that brings heavy rain, strong winds, and snow.

In Wales and the Midlands, widespread snow accumulation of 5-10 cm is foreseen, with localized areas experiencing 15-25 cm, and possibly up to 30 cm in some spots. Areas under amber warnings span from Sheffield in the north down to Leicester and across the West Midlands into Wales. These warnings commence at 8 PM on Thursday and remain in effect until 9 AM on Friday.

National Highways has released its own amber warning for snow affecting the West and East Midlands from 6 PM on Thursday until 9 AM on Friday, advising drivers to consider the forecast before undertaking journeys due to expectations of challenging driving conditions, particularly between Birmingham, Leicester, and Nottingham. Additionally, severe weather has necessitated the closure of the A628 Woodhead Pass in both directions from Thursday evening.

An amber wind warning is also in effect from 5 PM to 11 PM on Thursday across parts of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, with forecasters predicting gusts of 80-90 mph in exposed areas. A yellow wind warning for much of south-west England will be effective from 3 PM on Thursday until 6 AM on Friday.

In Scotland, a yellow warning for snow and ice is set to be in place until midday Thursday, while Northern Ireland faces a yellow ice warning until 10 AM. A yellow snow warning will cover large sections of England and most of Wales from 5 PM on Thursday until midday Friday, signaling that heavy snow could cause disruptions and difficult travel conditions.

To add to the concerns, amber cold weather health alerts have been issued by the UK Health Security Agency lasting until January 11, highlighting anticipated severe implications for health and social care services. Authorities warn of a potential rise in mortality rates, especially among individuals over 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions, though younger demographics might also be affected.

As Storm Goretti approaches, it underscores the importance of preparedness and caution among residents, especially those in the impacted regions. With the severity of the storm, officials are urging the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
