Local sports insider Mark Kaboly recently indicated that the Steelers are determined to secure a new receiver within the week through either free agency or trade.
Kaboly mentioned on his podcast that the team is “pretty much hell-bent on adding a receiver here within the next week,” coinciding with the start of the legal tampering period on Monday. Notably, last year, the Steelers made a significant trade for DK Metcalf just a day before this period, raising questions about the possibility of a similar maneuver this time around.
In the lead-up to the 2025 trade deadline, the Steelers reportedly engaged in discussions regarding three potential receivers: Jaylen Waddle, Brian Thomas Jr., and Jakobi Meyers. However, with Meyers now off the table after being extended by the Jaguars, interest may pivot towards Waddle or Thomas. The offseason has seen increasing speculation about the availability of both players, and Thomas, in particular, may be looking for a new team at the right price.
Kaboly further highlighted concerns about the trade market, especially following the Bills’ recent trade for DJ Moore, which set a high precedent for receiver deals. He suggested a hypothetical offer for Thomas could involve a third-round pick, possibly coupled with other later-round selections, but acknowledged that Jacksonville’s willingness to consider such an offer remains uncertain.
If trades do not materialize, the Steelers also have the option to explore free agency to bolster their receiving ranks. Potential free agent targets could include Jauan Jennings, Alec Pierce, Deebo Samuel, Mike Evans, Rashid Shaheed, Romeo Doubs, and Marquise Brown.
