A new film titled The Mandalorian & Grogu has officially begun production, bringing audiences back to the expansive Star Wars universe. Set between the iconic events of Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and Episode VII: The Force Awakens, this movie follows the beloved characters Din Djarin and Din Grogu on their adventures. Directed by Jon Favreau, with production led by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, the film is a spinoff of the popular television series Star Wars: The Mandalorian.
The announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu came on January 9, 2024, through an official release on StarWars.com, which included a conceptual sketch by renowned illustrator Ryan Church. This unveiling coincided with the announcement of a second season for the series Star Wars: Ahsoka and news of a fourth season of The Mandalorian still in development.
Originally included in Disney’s movie release schedule revealed in May 2019, The Mandalorian & Grogu was initially slated for a December 20, 2024 release. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the date was pushed back to December 19, 2025. Following the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, the anticipated release date shifted again, now set for May 22, 2026. Prior to the announcement of this project, a film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was slated for that date.
Star Wars Insider 224 confirmed that the film logo bears a resemblance to the one used for The Mandalorian Season Three. Excitement continued to build in August 2024 during D23 2024, when it was announced that the film had officially entered production. A teaser for the film was presented to attendees, unveiling an updated logo. Notably, acting legend Sigourney Weaver announced her participation in the film’s cast, hinting at an exciting addition to the story.
In conjunction with the film’s release, updates will be made to the Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run attraction. This upgrade will introduce a new mission featuring Djarin and Grogu, set in locations such as Tatooine, Endor, and Cloud City, providing fans with an immersive experience that complements the film’s narrative.
