The San Jose Sharks have officially cleared a roster spot for burgeoning talent Michael Misa. With their roster full at the maximum of 50 NHL contracts, the Sharks needed to make room for the 2025 No. 2 overall pick’s rookie contract.

To facilitate this, the team traded prospect Kyle Masters, who has spent the season in the ECHL, to the Carolina Hurricanes. In addition to Masters, the Sharks sent a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Hurricanes in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick, effectively adding to the trade’s value.

Misa, who has already played nine NHL games, is set to play his 10th this Friday night against the Detroit Red Wings. This milestone will activate the first year of his entry-level contract, marking a significant step in his professional career. After this game, the Sharks will revert to holding 50 contracts, now including Misa in place of Masters.

Coach Mike Warsofsky expressed optimism regarding Misa’s development, highlighting his progress since returning from the World Junior Championship. “I think he’s gotten better every period. That’s a big positive,” Warsofsky remarked on Misa’s first two games back. He noted the young player’s improving pace and positioning during breakouts while acknowledging there are areas for improvement defensively. Warsofsky emphasized that as Misa continues to adapt to the NHL’s pace, fans can expect to see more of his offensive capabilities.

The Sharks’ decision represents a strategic move to invest in a promising young player, and it illustrates the team’s commitment to developing talent for the future.
