The Seattle Seahawks are facing a critical injury issue as they prepare for their NFC Divisional Round matchup against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday. Quarterback Sam Darnold has been officially listed as questionable due to an oblique injury, a development that emerges just days before a pivotal playoff game. Notably, Darnold was not included on the injury report earlier in the week, raising concerns about the timing of this injury.

Despite the setback, Darnold remains optimistic about his chances of playing. Reports from Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune captured him jogging and utilizing a Theragun on his side during practice. Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak also indicated that backup quarterback Drew Lock has been receiving first-team reps, highlighting the team’s need to prepare for all scenarios.

While injuries to starting quarterbacks are never ideal, this particular situation is particularly challenging for the Seahawks so close to a playoff game. Darnold’s previous performance against the 49ers was impressive; he led the team to a victory in a crucial Week 18 game that secured the NFC West title and a first-round bye.

In his inaugural season with Seattle, Darnold had a commendable performance, completing 67.7 percent of his passes for 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. His staunch efforts earned him a spot in the Pro Bowl and placed the Seahawks in a favorable position for their playoff run. However, following an impressive 14-3 record as a starter for the Minnesota Vikings last season, Darnold’s playoff experience was marred by a Wild Card Round loss to the Los Angeles Rams, where he struggled under pressure.

Should Darnold be unable to play, Lock would step into the spotlight, despite having limited experience this season—attempting just three passes. Lock’s last starting role for the New York Giants ended with a disappointing 1-4 record, and he concluded the 2024 season with six touchdowns and five interceptions. His history as a starter shows a league-leading 15 interceptions during his 2020 season as well.

The Seahawks will undoubtedly need to navigate these challenges carefully as they approach the critical game against their division rivals. With the stakes high and doubts looming, Darnold’s possible return to health could make all the difference in Seattle’s pursuit of playoff success.
