The recent decision to lift the sea cucumber ban has attracted considerable interest, especially with Fisheries Minister Alitia Bainivalu clarifying that this initiative is being funded not through a separate budget but rather through the existing coastal fisheries development program within the ministry’s framework.

Minister Bainivalu highlighted that while there is no dedicated financial allocation for lifting the ban, the action is feasible under the broader financial plan aimed at promoting coastal fisheries development. Over the next six months, the ministry will concentrate on monitoring and management strategies to ensure that the harvesting practices remain sustainable.

Sea cucumbers, locally referred to as beche-de-mer, require a special license for harvesting, which is part of an established licensing process that is currently facing some delays. Nevertheless, fishermen who are awaiting new license approvals are allowed to continue their operations under their valid licenses from the previous year. Licenses are granted to registered members of recognized fishing communities and traditional fishing areas, including provisions for the spouses of community members involved in local fishing practices.

The minister also recognized the concerns raised by fishermen regarding purchasing prices and reassured that these issues are being taken seriously. Collaborations with relevant officers are underway to identify appropriate solutions.

This emphasis on sustainable management practices and community involvement in the licensing process illustrates the ministry’s dedication to balancing economic viability with ecological accountability in the fisheries sector. By implementing effective monitoring as they adapt to these changes, there is significant potential to enhance the local fishing industry while also supporting the livelihoods of fishermen. This approach fosters optimism for a robust and sustainable future for both the fishing community and the environment.
