The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) is playing an essential role in enhancing the nation’s sugar industry and improving the lives of local farmers. During a recent visit to SRIF in Drasa, Lautoka, Minister for Agriculture, Waterways, and Sugar Industry, Tomasi Tunabuna, praised the staff for their significant contributions to research, innovation, and technical support within the sector.

Founded in 2006, SRIF focuses on crucial tasks such as developing enhanced cane varieties, conducting soil and leaf analysis, testing cane quality, screening for pests and diseases, promoting crop diversification, producing disease-free seedcane, and managing various donor-funded projects. These initiatives not only boost productivity but also help sustain the livelihoods of farmers reliant on the sugar sector.

During his tour of laboratories, research plots, and seedcane facilities, Minister Tunabuna interacted with the staff about their ongoing programs. He emphasized the importance of continued excellence and innovation in their work.

The Minister reiterated the government’s dedication to employing science-based solutions to foster sustainable growth in Fiji’s sugar industry, underlining a hopeful future for both the sector and the farmers it supports. Such initiatives and government support signal a commitment to revitalizing and reimagining the sugar landscape in Fiji, aiming for both economic resilience and agricultural sustainability.
