The Fijian Media Association (FMA) and the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) have announced that the 8th Pacific Media Summit is set to take place from September 21 to 25, 2026, in Savusavu, Fiji. This significant biennial event is expected to draw around 150 to 200 media professionals from across the Pacific region, including journalists, editors, media executives, academics, development partners, donors, and other key stakeholders.
Under the theme “Reaching the Remote: Media and Digital Innovation for a Connected Blue Pacific,” the summit will address the essential need for reliable information access in isolated and underserved Pacific communities through strong and independent media outlets. The theme emphasizes the importance of regional collaboration, the establishment of resilient communication systems capable of surviving disasters, and the investment in emerging technologies to create a more connected and inclusive Blue Pacific.
The summit aims to foster dialogue and collaboration on vital media development topics relevant to the region. PINA President Kalafi Moala highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “The Pacific Media Summit continues to be our region’s most important platform for strengthening media solidarity and innovation, ensuring that even the most remote communities are connected, informed, and heard.”
FMA General Secretary Stanley Simpson expressed enthusiasm for Fiji’s role as the host for this pivotal meeting, looking forward to exploring how media and digital innovation can better serve island communities and strengthen regional connectivity.
The 2026 Summit will feature a variety of activities including panel discussions, keynote addresses, technical workshops, and networking sessions. These will cover a range of topics such as digital transformation, media sustainability, press freedom, climate reporting, and inclusive storytelling aimed at remote island communities. The practice of rotating the summit among different Pacific Island nations continues to be beneficial, as demonstrated by the recent summit held in Niue in September 2024.
As the event draws closer, further information concerning registration, program details, and partnership opportunities will be shared. This anticipation sets the stage for a gathering that aims to reinforce the indispensable role of independent media in promoting sustainable development, highlighting the commitment of the Pacific media community to adapt to ongoing challenges and ensure that every voice is heard in the Blue Pacific. This summit not only promises to strengthen connections among media professionals but also serves as a beacon of hope for improved media accessibility in remote areas.
