Sarah Jessica Parker is keeping the door open for a return to “Sex and the City,” but any future plans depend largely on the show’s creator, Michael Patrick King. Speaking at the Golden Eve gala in Beverly Hills on Tuesday, Parker expressed her enthusiasm about reprising her iconic role as Carrie Bradshaw, while emphasizing that the direction of the franchise rests in King’s hands.
“I hear lots of very original ideas, all lovely and well-intentioned and often very clever, but the only thing that really matters is what excites Michael Patrick King. And right now he’s just not thinking about that,” she stated.
Parker attended the gala to receive the prestigious Carol Burnett Award, making a rare West Coast appearance alongside her husband, Matthew Broderick, and their son, James Wilkie Broderick. The event also featured reunions with her “Sex and the City” co-stars Kristen Davis, Evan Handler, and David Eigenberg, showcasing the show’s enduring legacy.
In addition to her reflections on “Sex and the City,” Parker provided an update on the expected third installment of the “Hocus Pocus” franchise. She revealed that work is ongoing, echoing her excitement to team up again with Bette Midler: “Where Bette goes, I go. Bette is like a 13-year-old girl with a new bike. She’s like, ‘I have wheels, let us travel.’”
Parker also touched on the potential sequel to “The Family Stone,” a film that featured the late Diane Keaton. “I’m so excited, but it’s a rather bittersweet quandary given the loss of Diane Keaton,” Parker shared. “It was a very special group of actors, and prior to Diane’s passing, there had been conversations with everybody, so I hope that we’ll be able to [move forward]. The hardest thing is everybody’s schedules.”
The Golden Eve gala also honored Helen Mirren with the Cecil B. DeMille Award. The event was recorded for a primetime special, scheduled to air on CBS and Paramount+ on January 8. The anticipation continues to build for the 83rd Golden Globes, set to air on January 11.
With the possibility of future projects on the horizon, including conversations around beloved franchises and reuniting with cherished co-stars, fans of Parker and her iconic roles can remain hopeful for what’s to come.
