Family and community responsibility are vital components in the fight against drugs and narcotics, emphasizing the need to uphold traditional values, particularly in rural areas. This message was conveyed by Mereoni Marama during discussions regarding the Counter Narcotics Bill 2026, which took place in Nabouwalu.
Marama highlighted the troubling trend of increasing drug abuse within many iTaukei families, particularly in Christian communities, where both addiction and drug dealing are becoming more prevalent. She pointed out that this issue arises, in part, from deteriorating family structures and social support systems.
To combat these challenges, Marama urged families and communities to collaborate closely in seeking effective solutions. She encouraged the restoration of strong family values and the importance of guiding children in nurturing environments. “Parents and elders have a responsibility to set the right example and ensure that our children are protected from negative influences,” she asserted.
Another participant, Amelia Cakau, reinforced this notion by stating that the battle against drugs starts at home. She stressed that parents and guardians serve as role models and that their language, behavior, and lifestyle significantly influence young individuals in villages and rural settings. Cakau highlighted the importance of managing modern influences entering rural communities to prevent the erosion of cultural and moral values.
Additionally, attendees urged the government to promote broader community participation in the legislative process, particularly by encouraging more public feedback on the proposed Counter Narcotics Bill. Ongoing consultations on the bill will continue in Nabouwalu today and will extend to Labasa tomorrow, allowing more residents the chance to voice their opinions.
This proactive approach to address drug issues through the engagement of families and communities signals hope for a collective effort towards a healthier society, rooted in traditional values and supportive relationships.
