The Proteas Women, led by head coach Mandla Mashimbyi, celebrated a successful start to their ODI series against Ireland, claiming a seven-wicket victory in the opening match at Buffalo Park in East London. The team’s arrival in Gqeberha on Sunday was filled with optimism as they prepared for the second encounter at Dafabet St George’s Park on Tuesday morning, where they will seek to secure a series win.
Mashimbyi’s strategy for the series focused on allowing fringe players to step up and prove their potential, especially with the World Cup looming in 2029. One shining star from Saturday’s match was 20-year-old Miane Smit, who achieved her maiden ODI half-century, illustrating the success of Cricket SA’s U19 development program. Her performance was vital in guiding the Proteas to a comfortable 1-0 series lead.
Entering the crease during a challenging moment for her team, with the score at 86 for three and chasing a target of 210, Smit was elevated to bat at the number five position. Alongside seasoned player Sune Luus, Smit settled her nerves and the duo forged an impressive unbeaten 125-run partnership, setting a record for the highest fourth-wicket stand in East London.
Reflecting on her experience, Smit shared, “When I came in, my first 15 to 20 balls, I was so numb; I almost couldn’t even move. We worked on a partnership, and she kept me calm.” Their friendship off the field translated into effective teamwork, allowing Smit to gain confidence and highlight her capabilities as a young player contributing to her nation’s success.
As the series progresses, Smit expressed a desire to further develop her all-rounder skills, having already shown her talent with the ball by being the most economical bowler in her spell, allowing just 14 runs in four overs while taking a wicket.
Cricket fans are encouraged to attend Tuesday’s match, which marks the first women’s ODI at the historic St George’s Park. Tickets are available for purchase, with prices set at R50 for adults and R30 for children and pensioners, and gates open at 8 am, providing a chance to witness the rising talents of women’s cricket in South Africa.
