Richard McKenzie, aged 92, of Westland, Michigan, passed away on December 4, 2025. He was born on January 23, 1933, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to Edward and Amelia (Bischof) McKenzie. Richard is remembered by his family and friends, preceded in death by his parents and siblings, including sisters Marion Zedlar, Margaret Martin, Alma Crouse, and Dolores Golias, along with his brother Edward.
As a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Johnstown, Richard served as an altar boy during his formative years. He graduated from Bishop McCort Catholic High School, where he earned a spot in the basketball Hall of Fame, reflecting his early athletic talent. Richard then accepted a basketball scholarship to Bucknell University before being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, he married Catherine Kwiatkowski, and the couple cherished 68 years of marriage together.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Catherine, and their children: Rebecca (Dan) O’Brien, Stephen (Amy) McKenzie, David (Phil Earl) McKenzie, and Kristin (Jim) Rice. He was also a proud grandfather to Patrick O’Brien, Alexandra O’Brien, Scott McKenzie, and Rachel McKenzie.
Professionally, Richard had a rewarding career as a sales representative at Rockwell International, from which he later retired. He had a passion for golfing, duck hunting, fishing, and was particularly known for his care in growing exceptional tomato plants that he generously shared with family and neighbors. Above all, Richard treasured time spent with his family, especially during their annual vacations.
A private ceremony and interment will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. In honor of Richard’s life and to support ongoing research for various health conditions, those wishing to express sympathy may consider making a memorial donation to the American Heart Association, the American Alzheimer’s Association, or the Parkinson’s Foundation. Richard McKenzie’s legacy of love and family will undoubtedly continue to inspire those who knew him.
