Antipolo City’s 2nd District Representative, Romeo Acop, passed away on Saturday evening, following a reported heart attack. He was discovered unresponsive in his room at approximately 10:12 p.m. by his youngest child, Dr. Karla Marie Acop, and his security aide, Pat Frank Louie Pastrana, after a nurse alerted them to an emergency situation. Despite immediate medical attention at Assumption Hospital, Acop was pronounced dead at 10:56 p.m.

His death was confirmed by the Philippine National Police (PNP), as reported by Rizal Provincial Police Office. Additional details regarding the cause of death and arrangements for his wake have yet to be disclosed.

Acop, 78, was known for his legislative roles, including serving as vice chairperson of the House Quad Committee, which investigated Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators and policies from the Duterte administration relating to the war on drugs. His contributions to legislation included pushing for the proposed Anti-Extrajudicial Killing Act and the Civil Forfeiture Act. He also raised inquiries concerning the significant use of confidential funds linked to Vice President Sara Duterte’s office.

Before his political career, Acop was the Chief Director of the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group. His loss has been deeply felt in the political community, with House Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno expressing sorrow over Acop’s passing, noting that he had recently undergone a successful kidney transplant and was recuperating well, looking forward to returning to public life.

Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” Lacson also shared his grief, recalling their longstanding friendship and collaboration on police reform initiatives. He emphasized Acop’s integrity and dedication as a public servant and offered condolences to Acop’s family, highlighting the pain of losing both a friend and a notable figure in Philippine politics.
