TORONTO — The announcement of the 2026 All-Star Game reserves on Sunday marked the end of a highly anticipated selection period. Coaches across the league had the responsibility of voting for reserves in their respective conferences, advocating for their players both on and off the court. However, the rules dictate that coaches cannot vote for members of their own teams.

Toronto Raptors head coach Darko Rajaković had high hopes for his players. Before their game against the Utah Jazz, he expressed his belief that both Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram deserved All-Star nominations. “I think those two guys deserve consideration,” Rajaković stated. After a close 107-100 victory over Utah, it was confirmed that Barnes was selected as a reserve for the All-Star Game, while Ingram was not so fortunate.

Despite the disappointment for Ingram, who has had an injury-plagued career, his exclusion isn’t considered a major injustice. While the Raptors performed slightly better with Ingram off the floor this season, the team needs both him and Barnes healthy to truly compete in the Eastern Conference. Rajaković emphasized the complementary skills of both players, highlighting their unique abilities that enhance the team’s performance.

“This is a move forward for both of them,” Rajaković noted. “They respect and elevate each other’s game.” Ingram averages a team-high 21.9 points per game and has missed only two games this season, proving important to the Raptors’ success thus far alongside Barnes, who also continues to show improvement.

Ingram expressed mixed feelings following the announcement: “It stings a bit, but it’s motivation to keep going, keep getting better, and keep trying to win.” Interestingly, despite his plans to attend an All-Star celebrity game with his girlfriend, Ingram decided to remain in Toronto during the All-Star weekend, focusing on his preparation.

In a testament to their collective talent, both Ingram and Barnes played key roles in their recent win against the Jazz. Ingram demonstrated his scoring ability, while Barnes showcased defensive prowess with multiple blocks and steals. Their synergy has proven crucial for the Raptors, particularly in maintaining a competitive edge while missing center Jakob Poeltl.

As the team looks forward, Rajaković is optimistic about Barnes’ potential to reach even greater heights, stating, “The next thing for him is to be elected as a starter.” This off-hand remark suggests that the campaign for recognition within the league might be an ongoing effort, fostering hope for future achievements for the Raptors.
