Access to several communities in Rakiraki has been disrupted following an accident on the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) bridge earlier today. Residents from the areas of Colasi, Mullau, and Dugavatu are currently unable to reach the main road after an FSC vehicle encountered difficulties while traversing the bridge.

Eyewitness reports indicate that a wood plank from the bridge became lodged under the vehicle, causing damage to its drive shaft. This incident also led to the dislodgement of multiple wooden bridge slabs, raising serious safety concerns and rendering the bridge unsafe for use.

As a precaution, the bridge has been closed to all traffic, which has left the surrounding settlements temporarily isolated. Pre-existing concerns surrounding the bridge’s condition have surfaced, with community members expressing frustration over the lack of action taken regarding necessary repairs. One local resident highlighted the deteriorating state of the bridge, stating, “The wooden planks are loose, and it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.”

With schools scheduled to open tomorrow, authorities are expected to inspect the bridge to evaluate the damage and consider options for temporary repairs or alternative access solutions. Community members are hopeful that this incident will catalyze a permanent solution to the longstanding issues related to the bridge’s safety and accessibility.
