As Las Vegas gears up to ring in the New Year, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) is urging residents and businesses to conserve water by temporarily deactivating their landscape irrigation systems. With the National Weather Service predicting a 40 to 70 percent likelihood of rain on both Wednesday and New Year’s Day, followed by additional precipitation opportunities throughout the weekend and into next week, this is an opportune moment for water savings.

To make the most of the anticipated rainfall, the SNWA recommends that homeowners skip their next one or two scheduled watering days, allowing the natural precipitation to support their landscapes. This initiative is particularly crucial given the ongoing drought conditions affecting the Colorado River Basin and Lake Mead, which is the primary water source for 90 percent of Southern Nevada’s water supply.

Residents can also enhance their water conservation efforts by utilizing smart irrigation clocks that automatically adjust watering schedules based on recent rainfall. The SNWA encourages making use of these technologies by offering rebates of up to $100 toward the purchase price of such devices.

The SNWA plays a vital role in managing water conservation and quality for Southern Nevada, collaborating with various local districts and cities to promote sustainable water use.

With the potential for rain, this New Year’s celebration not only marks a fresh start but also presents an opportunity for the community to collectively contribute to water conservation efforts while enjoying nature’s gifts.
