Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has suggested that Sports Minister Jese Saukuru might need to consider stepping aside as investigations into the Fiji Sports Council travel controversy continue to unfold. This controversy arose from allegations regarding the use of a contra arrangement with Fiji Airways that facilitated the travel of Saukuru’s wife to New Zealand.

In a recent statement, Rabuka confirmed that he had already advised Saukuru to refrain from interfering with the ongoing investigation. He highlighted the example set by Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua, who voluntarily stepped back from his duties during a separate investigation last year, suggesting that this precedent could be relevant for Saukuru.

When specifically asked whether he was recommending Saukuru to take similar action, the Prime Minister indicated that it appears to be a wise option, saying, “Well, as a mature Member of Parliament, having been in now, going into his second term, hopefully he will realise that that might be the better option for all of us.” However, Rabuka did not issue a direct order for Saukuru to resign.

In light of the investigation, Saukuru has publicly acknowledged utilizing the contra arrangement but has also expressed his willingness to repay the owed amount. This indicates a step towards accountability, which may ultimately bolster public trust as the situation develops further. The ongoing investigation and its implications for both the sports community and the broader political landscape in Fiji are being closely watched.
