Prue Leith has announced her departure from The Great British Bake Off after an impressive nine-year tenure as one of its judges. The beloved television personality expressed her gratitude for the experience, stating, “Bake Off has been a fabulous part of my life for the last nine years. I have genuinely loved it, and I’m sure I’ll miss working with my fellow judge Paul, Alison, and Noel, along with the teams at Love Productions and Channel 4.”
At 86 years old, Leith feels that it’s an appropriate time for her to step back and pursue other interests, including spending more time in her garden. She conveyed her assurance that her successor would love the role just as much as she has.
Leith joined the show when it transitioned from the BBC to Channel 4, taking over from Mary Berry, who chose to remain with the BBC. Her time on the program has not been without its moments of controversy; in 2017, she accidentally revealed the winner via Twitter, a blunder she attributed to the time difference while she was in Bhutan. Leith later recounted the panic she felt when the tweet was sent, adding to the unique memories of her time on the show.
In addition to Bake Off, Leith has also contributed to other programs on Channel 4 since becoming a prominent figure. One notable show, Prue and Danny’s Death Road Trip, involved a discussion on euthanasia with her son, Danny Kruger.
