British Army Lance Corporal Pita Ratukadreu, who recently made headlines with his unexpected call-up to the Fiji national rugby team during the 2022 London Sevens, is set to return to Fiji this weekend to compete in the Coral Coast Sevens as part of the British Army 7s team.

Ratukadreu’s debut on the national stage was both surprising and momentous. While training with the British Army side in the UK, he received a call to join Fiji as a replacement player. The opportunity to don the Fijian jersey remains one of the standout moments of his rugby career.

“Receiving that call was surreal,” Ratukadreu recalled. “While preparing for a tournament in London, I was invited to join the national side. The moment the jersey presentation happened, I realized a dream was becoming a reality, and I was over the moon.”

The former player for QVS Old Boys and Pacific Warriors Nairai spoke of the humbling experience of being selected for the national team, particularly considering the wealth of rugby talent that exists in Fiji. “I am grateful to have been called up, and all glory goes to God,” he emphasized.

Before relocating to the UK, Ratukadreu laid the groundwork for his rugby career through local competitions, participating in both the 15s and sevens formats, which instilled in him the discipline necessary for success abroad.

As he returns to Fiji for the Coral Coast Sevens, Ratukadreu expresses hope that his journey will motivate young athletes to stay dedicated to their craft. The tournament promises to showcase both local and international talent, providing a platform for inspiration and growth in Fijian rugby. With events like this, the future of rugby in Fiji looks bright, encouraging a new generation to follow in Ratukadreu’s footsteps.
