Philadelphia is ushering in the New Year in a grand fashion with several festivities planned across the city, marking the approach of significant milestones. In a highlight event at the waterfront, a replica of the Liberty Bell is playing a central role in welcoming 2026.

“This is the younger sibling of the Liberty Bell that’s located a couple of blocks away,” stated Alaine Arnott, the president and CEO of the National Liberty Museum. The replica, which has been specially crafted to match the original in size, weight, and even features a symbolic crack, has an important history of its own. It has resided at the National Liberty Museum in Old City since its opening 25 years ago.

For the first time, the replica was moved out of the museum to its new location. Arnott shared that the moving process involved extensive planning over eight weeks to ensure the bell’s safe transit. A moving crew skillfully maneuvered the 2,000-pound bell out of the museum and into a forklift to navigate the cobblestone streets of the Old City.

By midday, the bell had successfully arrived at Cherry Street Pier. The event serves as the kickoff for the semiquincentennial celebrations, marking 250 years of American history. Sarah Eberle, the creative director at the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, expressed excitement about the forthcoming fireworks display. This year, the show has been expanded significantly from one barge to three, allowing the spectacle to be seen even more broadly across the waterfront.

As a unique feature of the celebrations, the replica Liberty Bell will ring at both 6 p.m. and midnight, signifying the start of each fireworks show and commemorating America’s 250th birthday year. Arnott conveyed a powerful message about the significance of the bell, stating that those who ring it should reflect on the idea that “liberty is worth fighting for.”

This event not only emphasizes the rich history of Philadelphia but also highlights the community’s spirit and commitment to honoring freedom and heritage. As the city comes alive with celebrations, there is a palpable sense of hope and enthusiasm for the future.
