Vendors at the Suva Municipal Market are expressing growing frustration over ongoing drainage problems that they claim have not been resolved despite numerous complaints. Fulori Toga, a vendor operating in the Vale ni Kana area, which specializes in ready meals, shared that they have highlighted the issue to the market master multiple times, yet meaningful improvements have not materialized.

The persistent blockages have become a significant disruption to their daily operations, raising concerns about hygiene. Toga highlighted how these issues hinder their ability to serve customers effectively. In response, Suva City Council (SCC) chief executive officer Tevita Boseiwaqa acknowledged the recurring drainage issues and explained that the old system is susceptible to blockages. He pointed out that the underground drainage in areas like Vale ni Kana and the fish market tends to get obstructed approximately every two weeks.

Boseiwaqa confirmed that the drainage system is currently blocked and mentioned that the council is waiting for a contractor to conduct necessary flushing works. He noted that vendors had been advised against cleaning fish directly in specific areas, as these practices contribute to the clogging.

The CEO reassured that the vendors had participated in hygiene training sessions, including food safety training conducted the previous year. However, he indicated that some traditional practices persist, and the council is actively working to guide vendors towards better methods. While acknowledging the need for improvements in the drainage system, Boseiwaqa emphasized that maintaining cleanliness is also a shared responsibility between the council and the vendors. He urged that issues should typically be reported to the market manager or through the Market Vendors Association.

This situation highlights the importance of community cooperation in maintaining hygiene and infrastructure within public markets, as both vendors and the council work together towards finding effective solutions.
