In a significant move, the New England Patriots have signed outside linebacker Jesse Luketa to a one-year contract, marking their first external free agent signing of the 2026 NFL offseason. The announcement was made by NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Jesse Luketa, 27, originally entered the league as a seventh-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2022 NFL Draft after a notable collegiate career at Penn State. Over three seasons in Arizona, Luketa participated in 31 games, starting in three of them, and accumulated three sacks exclusively during the 2024 season.
Last year, he was part of the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad but did not see any action on the field. His eligibility to sign before the new league year begins is attributed to his status of not being on an active NFL roster at the conclusion of the regular season.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 253 pounds, Luketa is recognized for his high motor and powerful rushing abilities. He also contributed significantly to special teams during his tenure with the Cardinals.
The Patriots are expected to prioritize enhancing their edge rusher position this offseason, particularly as K’Lavon Chaisson, their leading edge rusher from the previous season, is a pending free agent. Luketa’s addition could potentially bolster their defensive lineup as they look to strengthen their performance on that front.
