In Santo Domingo, the journey of identity for young Benjaín has evolved into a complex legal struggle for Dr. Carmen Taveras. The healthcare professional publicly expressed her frustrations on the program “Esto No es Radio,” revealing that, despite existing court rulings and DNA evidence, the process of seeking financial support and formal recognition from the famed bachatero Anthony Santos has stalled. She attributes this impasse to alleged irregularities within the judicial system and ongoing harassment.
Dr. Taveras recounted that during her sixth month of pregnancy, she faced pressure from various individuals to sign a document that would relieve “El Mayimbe” of paternal responsibilities. The anesthesiologist expressed her disillusionment with the legal representation available to her, stating that many attorneys seem to be swayed by the artist’s influence. She noted that a court ruling has been in place since July of last year, yet details regarding the child’s father have been handled with extreme secrecy.
“You pay your money, go to court… and the lawyers betray you shamelessly,” Dr. Taveras lamented. “In over a year of proceedings, that child has not received even a bottle of milk.”
The relationship between Dr. Taveras and Santos began professionally when she approached his radio station to pursue a career as a broadcaster. However, following a brief romance, the news of her pregnancy was met with mockery and harassment, as she detailed. Their communication, which lasted about a month, transitioned into cordial visits at her home, after which the artist, upon learning of her pregnancy, exhibited no support whatsoever. “He laughed and thought it was a joke when he found out,” Dr. Taveras recalled regarding Santos’ initial reaction.
Beyond the financial aspects, Taveras insists her primary battle is for her child’s right to identity. She expressed disappointment at the negative narrative surrounding her in her hometown, where malicious rumors circulated regarding paternity, seemingly to shield Santos’ image. Addressing claims of financial ambition, she clarified that she is an independent professional with her own practice: “The foremost right is a person’s identity… that identity comes from both father and mother.”
This case sheds light on broader issues concerning parental rights and the challenges faced within the judicial system, highlighting the importance of addressing both legal and personal matters in a fair and transparent manner. Dr. Taveras’ continued fight not only seeks accountability but also emphasizes the fundamental rights related to identity for all children.
