The Carolina Panthers are intensifying their efforts to bolster their edge-rushing capabilities under defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. However, a recent insider update suggests that a key target—All-Pro edge rusher Trey Hendrickson—may favor a move to a rival team within their division.

As general manager Dan Morgan navigates a tight salary cap, anticipation builds among fans for potential contract restructures and player releases ahead of the legal tampering period. Innovative contract structures could provide the team with the maneuverability needed to pursue top talent.

Trey Hendrickson has become a focal point of interest following the Cincinnati Bengals’ decision not to franchise tag him, marking the end of a tumultuous period that saw him rise as the NFL’s sack leader in 2023 and 2024. The departure was acknowledged on social media, resonating with the Bengals’ fan base.

Prominent sports insider Adam Schefter has indicated that Hendrickson might prefer joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over other teams, including the Panthers. He pointed out that Hendrickson’s residency in Ponte Vedra makes Tampa an appealing option, not to mention Florida’s lack of state income tax. According to Schefter, “If Trey has a pick, I think he’d like to end up (with the Bucs), but we will see if it works out that way.”

Although the Panthers could pursue Hendrickson, the prospect of facing him twice a season with a moving left tackle position raises concerns for Carolina, especially as they aim to defend their NFC South title in 2026. Despite dealing with injuries last season, Hendrickson remains a top-tier performer, and his potential signing could pose a significant challenge.

With the Buccaneers keen on winning in the present—demonstrated by their decision to retain head coach Todd Bowles and maintain an aging yet competitive roster—Hendrickson could fit seamlessly into their championship window.

As Morgan and head coach Dave Canales strategize for additional edge and linebacker support, they will closely monitor developments within their division. The Panthers are undoubtedly hoping the Buccaneers either lack the interest in Hendrickson or face financial hurdles in their pursuit. If Tampa successfully lands Hendrickson, it would create a notable obstacle for Carolina’s championship aspirations.
