New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming Super Bowl, while his brother Trevon is navigating a challenging time in the NFL as he seeks a new team. The Green Bay Packers confirmed on Tuesday that they have released Diggs, marking the second time this season he has been let go after the Dallas Cowboys cut ties with him at the end of December.
The Packers had acquired Diggs on December 31, absorbing the remainder of his five-year, $97 million contract that he had signed in the summer of 2023. Despite his high-profile signing, Diggs’ tenure with Green Bay proved brief. He made a modest contribution during his last regular season game, totaling two combined tackles. His playoff appearance against the Chicago Bears on January 10 was minimal, as he played only one snap on defense.
The Packers’ decision to part ways with Diggs has resulted in a significant financial move, freeing up over $15 million in salary cap space. This was a strategic decision as Diggs was set to earn $14.5 million in 2026 with no guaranteed money left on his contract.
Diggs initially began his career with great promise, securing Pro Bowl selections in both 2021 and 2022 and leading the NFL with an impressive 11 interceptions in 2021. However, his performance has been hampered by injuries, particularly a season-ending torn ACL that limited his participation to just two games in 2023.
Looking ahead, the Patriots may consider signing Diggs in the upcoming offseason as they seek to bolster their cornerback position. This potential move could provide a new opportunity for Diggs to revive his career and contribute to a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
