TUCSON — Arizona State’s women’s basketball team made waves by defeating their rivals, Arizona, in a thrilling overtime game with 8,766 fans in attendance at McKale Center, marking a key moment in the renewed rivalry between the two programs. This victory not only ended Arizona’s seven-game winning streak but also allowed ASU to achieve its first season sweep of Arizona since February 2018.

Head Coach Becky Burke of Arizona expressed her appreciation for the noisy environment at Arizona State’s recent home game against Arizona, where they drew a record crowd of 6,121, calling it a testament to the game’s atmosphere. Her comments seemed to fuel the anticipation leading up to this latest matchup.

ASU guard Gabby Elliott, who was aware of Burke’s remarks, emphasized the importance of playing at the intimidating atmosphere of McKale Memorial Center. “We’re going to play 10 times harder,” she stated, underscoring the motivation behind the team’s performance.

The competition was fierce. Despite challenges with two guards fouling out and having players in unfamiliar positions, ASU managed to clinch a 75-69 overtime win. Coach Molly Miller described the experience as a “win for women’s basketball,” acknowledging that the diverse crowd size and electric atmosphere bode well for the future of the sport.

The Sun Devils demonstrated grit, overcoming a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Arizona saw a short-lived surge when they went on a 10-0 run, taking the lead late in the game. ASU’s success hinged on their ability to remain composed, even when Elliott was fouled on a crucial 3-point attempt, allowing her to keep ASU within striking distance.

With under seven seconds left in regulation and scores tied, Miller called for a well-crafted final play. The play unfolded seamlessly, leading to Mckinna Brackens scoring a midrange shot that sent the game into overtime. During the overtime period, Brackens was pivotal, contributing eight of her total 24 points and showcasing her resilience.

Elliott’s determination was evident as she returned to the court with a strong showing, despite an injury scare in the first quarter that temporarily sidelined her. Miller praised her toughness, noting that Elliott’s confidence resonates throughout the team.

Though ASU started slowly, giving up several baskets in the first quarter, they quickly regrouped, showcasing their defensive skills and shooting improvement. Forward Heloisa Carrera played a crucial role with a double-double, rejuvenating ASU’s offensive performance in the second half.

Looking ahead, ASU has four remaining games before the Big 12 tournament, starting with a match against Iowa State on February 18. As they push for an NCAA Tournament berth, the Sun Devils’ resilience and strong team dynamics make them a formidable contender in the weeks ahead.
