At the age of 30, Votonimoli faced a life-altering moment when he lost his right arm during Cyclone Ana in 2021. Initially, doctors informed him that amputation was necessary to save his life. Yet, succumbing to defeat was never part of his plan.
Now a father to six children, he shares custody, with his three sons living with his ex-wife and his daughters residing with him. Josaia maintains a farm in Toga, Rewa, where he grows fruits and vegetables to support his family. However, the money earned from selling mussels plays a crucial role in meeting his family’s financial needs.
“I do this for my kids,” he states, underscoring his commitment to providing for them. Although he has traditionally sold at the Nausori market, his venture into the Laqere market has proven fruitful. The positive reception he receives reinforces his belief in hard work.
Many who encounter him are often astonished, questioning how he manages to sustain his activities with just one arm. Votonimoli’s message is clear: “I do it because I must. If I can do this with one arm, what’s stopping you?”
