Police have forwarded an investigation file concerning alleged sedition involving former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). This update was confirmed by police spokesperson Ana Naisoro, emphasizing that the file was dispatched on January 7, 2026.
The ODPP indicated that they first received the investigation file in February 2023, at which point they conducted a review of the evidence. After their assessment, the file was returned to the police with recommendations for further investigation. As of now, the ODPP stated that the file has been sent back to them for more detailed analysis, which is currently underway following standard procedures.
The investigation focuses on allegations that Mr. Bainimarama and Mr. Qiliho sought to incite military intervention in the aftermath of the general elections held in December 2022. Reports suggest that during negotiations for a coalition government involving the People’s Alliance Party, the National Federation Party, and SODELPA, the two figures allegedly advocated for military presence in the streets of Suva.
This inquiry underscores the mounting tensions in Fiji’s political landscape following the recent elections. It also reflects the commitment of the judiciary and law enforcement to thoroughly investigate serious allegations, ensuring that accountability is upheld at the highest levels of government. The results of the ODPP’s review may significantly shape the political climate in Fiji in the near future.
