COLLEGE PARK, Md. — No. 1 Maryland (1–0) is set to face No. 2 Syracuse (2-0) in a highly anticipated lacrosse showdown at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., on Saturday at 6 p.m., with live coverage available on ACC Network. This matchup marks an exciting start to the 2026 season for the Terrapins, who are celebrating the 101st campaign of their storied men’s lacrosse program.

The Terrapins, coming off a strong season where they finished as the national runner-up, are riding the momentum of a successful opening game, which saw them defeat Loyola with a score of 19-10. This victory marked Maryland’s highest goal total in a game since 2022, extending their impressive streak to 33 consecutive season-opening wins. Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Leo Johnson made his mark on the team by scoring five goals in his debut.

Maryland and Syracuse share a fierce rivalry going back to 1927, with the Terps leading the all-time series 16–6. Their recent encounters showcase an exciting trend: Maryland has dominated the series, winning the last eight matchups and outscoring Syracuse 102-69 since 2011. Last season, the two teams faced off twice; Maryland won both, including a decisive 14-8 win in the NCAA Tournament semifinals.

Coached by John Tillman, who boasts a remarkable career record of 216-75, Maryland continues to prove its prowess in NCAA Division I lacrosse. Under Tillman’s leadership, the program achieved an undefeated season in 2022 and consistently ranks among the nation’s elite. Meanwhile, Syracuse, led by Gary Gait in his fifth season as head coach, has also seen success, including an ACC Championship win since 2016 and an NCAA Tournament Final Four appearance last year.

As they continue their journey through the 2026 season, Maryland looks to capitalize on key returners, including veterans like Eric Spanos, who was recently honored with the coveted No. 1 jersey. Spanos enters the season with 116 points in his career, along with fellow attackmen and midfielders Braden Erksa and Zach Whittier. The Terps’ defensive lineup also boasts experienced players like Will Schaller and AJ Larkin, while senior goalie Brian Ruppel is expected to anchor the defense after a successful stint last season.

With high attendance figures last season—ranking second nationally in average attendance—the excitement for Maryland lacrosse continues to grow. During the past year, they achieved significant crowds, including a standout game against Notre Dame that attracted over 10,000 fans.

The upcoming matchup against Syracuse promises to be thrilling, showcasing the strengths of both teams as they strive for victory. As Maryland aims to build on its rich legacy in lacrosse, fans are eager to see if they can extend their winning streak in this historic rivalry.
