More than $280,000 was raised at this year’s Christmas at the Ritz, an event organized by the Women of Chapman (WOC) at the Balboa Bay Resort. The gala attracted 275 attendees, including notable guests like Kathy Hamilton, Leslie Cancellieri, and Donna Bunce, who enjoyed a festive Champagne reception featuring Queen Cocktail cosmos and an exquisite menu by chef Diego Bernal, inspired by the former Ritz restaurant’s culinary traditions.

The evening’s highlight included live and silent auctions, with proceeds directed to the WOC’s student Hardship Assistance Fund. Robin Follman, a member of WOC, enhanced the atmosphere with her performances of beloved Christmas songs. The audience was emotionally engaged by a poignant speech from Mina Beattie, who shared her experience as a previous recipient of the hardship scholarship.

Celebrating the spirit of the season were community leaders including Jim Burra, Janie and Matt Parlow, Adrienne Brandes, and Stephen Gall.

Since its inception in 1971, the Women of Chapman have played a crucial role in fundraising for Chapman University, contributing over $10 million to the institution. The annual Christmas at the Ritz event was chaired by Jacqui Penner, with support from WOC President Adrienne Brandes and their dedicated committee, ensuring the success of the evening.

The event also saw participation from numerous supportive underwriters, including Sally Segerstrom, the Argyros Family Foundation, and others, which contributed to the substantial amount raised through tickets, sponsorships, auctions, and opportunity drawings.

In a related community event, CureDuchenne, a nonprofit focused on funding research for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, held its second annual Ladies Luncheon Newport Beach at Shady Canyon Golf Club. The event showcased a luxurious fashion presentation by Max Mara South Coast Plaza, and guests enjoyed gourmet dining with wine pairings. Debra Miller, the organization’s founder, expressed gratitude for the community’s support in raising awareness and funds vital for advancing research aimed at finding a cure for this life-threatening condition affecting many families.

Together, these events demonstrate the power of community and generosity, showcasing how collective efforts can pave the way for essential support and groundbreaking research. Such initiatives not only uplift the spirits of those involved but contribute significantly to meaningful change in society.
