A cold night is forecasted ahead of a significant snowstorm expected to hit the area starting Sunday mid-morning. According to meteorologist A.J. from Stormteam 5, the drop in wind speeds will reduce the impact of wind chills tonight, but frigid temperatures will still prevail.
Snow is predicted to begin between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., with some coastal regions possibly experiencing ocean effect snow showers earlier. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated between 3 p.m. and midnight, at which point travelers are advised to complete their journeys. While lighter snow will continue into Monday, the storm will wrap up by evening.
A winter storm warning is currently in effect for a wide area, extending across several states, including parts of Texas and New Mexico. In Massachusetts, temperatures are expected to plummet into the single digits overnight, with Boston forecasted to drop to 13 degrees and nearby Worcester even colder at 5 degrees.
The snow accumulation could vary significantly, with predictions indicating 12 to 18 inches for many areas, particularly around Worcester and the Blackstone Valley. A coastal front is expected to enhance total snowfall in the region, giving rise to the potential for over 18 inches in some locations, including the Berkshires. However, areas like the Cape and the islands may see lesser amounts due to expected sleet and mixing.
Timing is crucial, as snowflakes may start falling along the coast as early as 8 a.m. However, the most impactful snowfall will not commence until around 10 or 11 a.m. By 3 p.m., travelers should expect difficult conditions as the snow builds up quickly, with forecasts suggesting as much as four inches could accumulate in just a few hours.
Given these conditions, travel during this period is strongly discouraged, with the storm’s intensity leading to high impact on roadways. Conversely, due to the light and powdery nature of the snow, concerns about roof damage are minimal since it will be manageable to clear away.
Once the storm passes, replacement of snowfall with sun is expected, providing a glimmer of hope after the intense weather. Overall, while the approaching snowstorm poses challenges, residents can prepare adequately for the conditions, keeping safety as a priority.
