Nebraska senior safety DeShon Singleton will be unable to participate in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl due to an injury, as confirmed by interim defensive coordinator Phil Snow. Singleton, a prominent leader on the team and one of its six captains this season, was part of the travel squad for the bowl game. Head coach Matt Rhule included him in the media availability session on Friday, alongside senior wide receiver Dane Key and freshman quarterback TJ Lateef.
Having received an additional year of eligibility due to an NCAA exemption for athletes who previously attended junior college, Singleton made a significant impact during his time with the Huskers. After playing the 2021 season at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, he started all 12 games this season, amassing 70 tackles, four of which were for a loss, six pass deflections, two interceptions, and a sack.
Unfortunately, this injury will conclude Singleton’s collegiate career, as this was his final season of eligibility. Over his time at Nebraska, he achieved a total of 163 tackles, 11 passes defended, and three interceptions.
Nebraska is set to face No. 15 Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl on New Year’s Eve at 2:30 p.m. CT, with the game airing on ESPN. The absence of key players like Singleton will undoubtedly pose challenges for the team, but it also offers an opportunity for others to step up in this important matchup.
