A severe cold wave has gripped the nation, marking the coldest weather experienced so far this winter. Residents are urged to dress warmly with proper winter gear and to limit outdoor activities whenever possible. Cold wave warnings are currently in effect across most regions, with a cold wave alert issued for northern Gyeonggi Province and parts of Gangwon, Chungbuk Jecheon, and northeastern Gyeongsangbuk-do for the first time this winter.

This morning, temperatures in Seoul dipped to a chilling -11.7 degrees Celsius, with the wind chill making it feel close to -18 degrees. In Cheorwon’s Imnam-myeon, the temperature plummeted to -22.1 degrees. Furthermore, heavy snow alerts have been issued for Ulleungdo, Dokdo, northwest Jeollanam-do, and the mountainous regions of Jeju Island. By this afternoon, Ulleungdo and Dokdo are expected to receive up to 15 cm of snowfall, while up to 10 cm is anticipated in Jeju’s mountainous areas, along with an additional 1-5 cm of snow in the Honam region.

Despite the cold temperatures, the average daily fine dust levels across the country are reported as ‘good,’ indicating clear air quality. However, the biting cold will persist throughout the day, with daytime highs remaining low; Seoul is expected to reach -4 degrees, Sejong -2 degrees, and both Jeonju and Daegu around 0 degrees. The cold spell is expected to ease starting tomorrow afternoon, but rain or snow is anticipated across the central regions this weekend.

As the cold weather continues, it’s crucial to stay warm and cautious, ensuring not only personal comfort but also safety during this harsh winter period.
