The Fijian Drua are poised to make notable adjustments to their starting line-up as they aim to break a two-match losing streak against the powerful Hurricanes in Lautoka this Saturday. The Drua have encountered difficulties in their opening games of the season, suffering defeats in both, whereas the Hurricanes come off a resounding 52-10 win over Moana Pasifika.

Despite the challenging start, Drua head coach Glen Jackson maintains a positive outlook heading into the encounter. He anticipates that the expected rain might enhance the game, creating an engaging atmosphere for fans. “It’s going to be a great game. There’s a fair bit of rain around, and that will bring the heat down. It will be awesome to have a massive crowd. Everyone knows we love to play in the wet,” Jackson expressed, highlighting the competitive spirit of previous encounters with the Hurricanes.

A standout moment for the Drua will be the debut of sevens star Joji Nasova, who will take the wing position. Jackson praised Nasova’s successful transition from the sevens format to the Flying Fijians, stating, “Joji is going to get his debut. He has been good in his transition from 7s, so we are excited to see him perform. He is a quality player and a quality man.”

However, the Drua are facing challenges with injuries, as co-captain Temo Mayanavanua is expected to be out for around six weeks due to a knee injury sustained in the match against the Waratahs. Although Jackson noted that the injury is less severe than initially feared, he acknowledged the profound impact Mayanavanua’s absence will have on the team’s leadership.

Furthermore, the Drua are undergoing significant changes, with two key players from the Fijiana Drua, flanker Elia Canakaivata and wing Ponipate Loganimasi, having signed contracts with the Sale Sharks in the UK. These players have been pivotal to the success of the Drua, and their departure is seen as a considerable loss. “Losing quality players like that is not ideal for us. I know the Sale Sharks are a good team, and he’ll be great over there,” Jackson remarked regarding Canakaivata’s move, reflecting on the impact of their short stay with the team.

The Drua will face the Hurricanes at 3:35 PM Fiji Time on Saturday at Churchill Park in Lautoka. Fans remain hopeful that this match could serve as a turning point in the season, as the Fijian side strives for their first victory.
