In a significant advancement for gender equality in the workplace, the Nasinu Town Council has appointed its first female garbage collector, signaling a commitment to creating equal opportunities for all, irrespective of gender, race, or background. Amalaini Bui, who joined the team in July, expressed that her decision to pursue this role was largely inspired by her family, particularly her four children.
Ms. Bui credits her Christian faith for helping her navigate the challenges she faces as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field. She encourages other women to embrace opportunities in such roles and not to shy away from what has long been considered a man’s job.
Furthermore, Ms. Bui has made a plea to communities to aid sanitation workers by ensuring that waste is properly secured in garbage bags on collection days. She emphasized that improper waste disposal can lead to delays in collection, as workers must spend valuable time cleaning up scattered rubbish instead of focusing on other areas of the town.
