A reporter for a Spanish-language news outlet in Tennessee has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) without being shown a warrant during her arrest, as revealed by court documents filed by her attorney. Estefany Rodriguez Florez, a reporter for Nashville Noticias known for her critical coverage of ICE, was apprehended on Wednesday during a traffic stop.

Rodriguez’s attorney has called for her immediate release; however, ICE seeks to have the request denied. According to court records, she is a Colombian citizen who entered the U.S. lawfully and has lived here for five years. She holds a valid work permit and is currently in the process of applying for political asylum and legal status through her husband, a U.S. citizen.

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists has weighed in on the case, emphasizing its opposition to immigration tactics that apprehend journalists and interfere with news coverage concerning immigration enforcement. Rodriguez, who has faced death threats in Colombia due to her reporting on crime, was in a marked Nashville Noticias vehicle when she was detained.

Initially, ICE claimed in a Friday court filing that an arrest warrant was issued for Rodriguez on the preceding Monday and suggested her visa had expired. However, Rodriguez’s lawyer contends that while speaking with an ICE agent, they were informed that no arrest warrant existed at the time of her detention. Instead, she was presented with an immigration document requesting her appearance before ICE.

Rodriguez’s legal representation also noted that ICE postponed a scheduled meeting twice, once due to adverse weather conditions and again because of administrative issues. A new meeting is now set for March 17.

Joining Nashville Noticias in 2022, Rodriguez has focused on issues affecting social, family, health, and immigration matters. Her employer has expressed a desire for her prompt reunification with her young daughter and husband so she can continue her legal process within the framework of the law.

This situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of journalists and reinforces the importance of protecting press freedoms, especially in controversial areas such as immigration enforcement. The hope remains that Rodriguez will soon be back with her family and able to resume her vital work in the community.
