The blue discoloration in Nabua Creek, noted two weeks ago, has been attributed to the discharge of dye into the waterway. This unusual sight caught the attention of the public, prompting an investigation by authorities to identify the source of the pollution.

Seru Soderberg, the Chief Executive Officer of the Water Authority of Fiji, confirmed that water samples from the creek were analyzed, confirming the presence of dye. Soderberg emphasized the importance of preventing such incidents by advising both the public and businesses against disposing of dyes or similar chemicals into the sewerage system. He explained that these chemicals can harm the beneficial bacteria responsible for waste breakdown during sewage treatment.

Furthermore, Soderberg highlighted the precarious state of Fiji’s sewerage infrastructure, which is already aging. The introduction of harsh chemicals accelerates its deterioration, raising serious concerns about environmental safety and public health. This incident serves as a reminder of the need for responsible waste disposal practices to protect local ecosystems and maintain the integrity of essential infrastructure.
