Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Penioni Koliniwai Ravunawa emphasized the importance of valuing people’s mother languages in fostering trust, especially in healthcare delivery. Speaking at an event in Suva commemorating International Mother Language Day, Mr. Ravunawa highlighted that language transcends mere communication, embodying identity, history, and tradition.

“Our mother tongue is the foundation of who we are. It connects generations and preserves our traditions,” he stated. He praised event organizers for promoting cultural awareness alongside a commitment to healthy living, pointing out that collaborations between Fiji and India have positively impacted communities in areas such as health, education, agriculture, and capacity building.

Mr. Ravunawa articulated that such partnerships not only strengthen relationships but also reinforce shared values of respect and inclusion. He recounted a personal story from his early medical practice in Labasa, where learning basic Hindi phrases like “Ram Ram” helped him connect with elderly patients. This experience underscored his belief that speaking a patient’s native language fosters trust, enhances understanding, and ultimately leads to better health outcomes.

He remarked, “Communication in one’s own language builds trust, improves understanding and supports better health outcomes. Inclusion begins with being heard and being understood.” Ravunawa noted that Fiji’s multicultural and multilingual environment is one of the nation’s greatest assets and encouraged respect for each other’s languages to promote deeper community bonds.

In conclusion, he urged communities to actively preserve their linguistic heritage while collaborating to create “a healthy, inclusive and united society.” This celebration of language not only honors personal and cultural identities but also contributes to the overall well-being of Fiji’s diverse population. By promoting inclusive healthcare practices that embrace the rich tapestry of languages, Fiji sets a hopeful example of unity and understanding.
